Ricki’s Promise.
A Film by Changfu Chang
“After Mengting was born, we did everything we could to hide her and to keep her. We never intended to abandon her. When we went outside, we would put our child in a big grocery bag, with one person holding both of her hands and the other holding both her feet, so no one would know what was inside. Mengting was such an adorable child, so cooperative. We asked her not to make any noise and she’d stay quiet, not making a sound. At home, she would hide upstairs, very quiet.” Chinese Mother
“We had to keep moving and hiding it was really painful for us. We knew it wasn’t a long-term solution. We needed to get a registration for our daughter.” Chinese parents
“I went to the orphanage several times. I remember there was one time I was really close to her. She ran to me, my little Mengting! She recognized me! At the moment, she was in a room inside. She stared at me and then ran to me. I took her to the stairway, but the nurse in charge came upstairs yelling, “STOP!” I ran away without her.” Chinese Father
