Rumors of adoption scandals in Bangladesh and Indonesia.

On August 8th, 1979 Dutch media write about the trade-in of hundreds of Indonesian babies, these babies are put up for adoption with falsified papers to Dutch and other foreign couples. The telegram reports, Illegal babies from Indonesia can stay in the Netherlands. The department of Justice says, “Returning them would be inhumane.”

“On August 20, 1979, my adoptive parents receive permission to adopt from the Ministry of Justice to adopt two children. The same day my adoptive parents give a power of attorney to Mr. J.H. Sahetapy in Indonesia. The power of attorney is given by means of a Dutch notarial deed. At that point, my adoptive parents didn’t know that this Mr. Sahetapy was engaged in shady practices.”
